Rediscover a sense of inspiration by establishing exactly what it is you love about your day and what it is you dread. Once you’ve obtained this, you can then go about building upon what excites you and disposing of, or delegating, what doesn’t. After all, you spend at least eight hours of your day at work and that’s excluding the commute and the amount of time you spend thinking about it.

We’ve all felt bored, uninspired or frustrated at work. Even if you’re well on track to a form of tangible success or working your dream job, it’s easy to lose focus. There’s a vast difference between short and long-term motivation. It could be that you’ve achieved your short-term goals and sense you may have become stagnant. Or maybe you’ve achieved a long-term goal sooner than expected? It might be that you’re a business owner spending too much time on those humdrum yet highly necessary everyday tasks?

Identify what it is that inspires you:

You need to ask yourself what it is in your current role that you enjoy, what stimulates you?

There has to be something about your job that excites you; otherwise you wouldn’t have taken it in the first place. Try to assess your situation. Is it monotonous work? If so, find ways to make it more appealing for yourself:

Focus on the features in your role that enliven you and spend more time doing what you’re passionate about. You’re probably wondering where to find the time? Incentivize yourself by making sure you get through the more tedious work as fast as possible so you can spend more of your day focused on the more enjoyable projects at hand.

Try communicating with colleagues that inspire you:

Surround yourself with individuals at work who have a positive attitude. Reach out to people that come across as driven and ask them for advice. I know this might come across as a little harsh, but I dare you to try not complain for two weeks, challenging yourself to stay enthusiastic for an extended period of time. You may find that a positive mindset could change others’ perception of you, making you more approachable, which could lead to a healthier outlook on your current work environment.

I’m sure you’ve heard it many a time before but try to be optimistic. In the words of Noam Chomsky, “Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.”

Identify what it is that’s making you feel uninspired:

Even artists who are presumably doing what they love sometimes become uninspired. Being honest with yourself goes a long way! It could be that something small is demotivating you and has affected your mindset, causing you to feel wearisome.

If so, try the following:

Write down a list of the goals you’ve achieved so far. My father once told me not to make a molehill into a mountain. It’s an old saying but it still rings true. Many of us let a few small things affect us more than they should and then all of a sudden the problem becomes a massive beast that we can’t tame. It could just be a minor aspect that needs to change and that’s why reflection in itself is a great technique to find out what’s missing, what it is specifically that’s creating the issue. Write down the things that are bugging you. Write down the things that inspire you. This really simple technique will prove crucial in clarifying what it is you’re looking for.
